Melania

Just love FLOTUS rockin' the Red Cape!

The recent G-20 summit was nothing short of a triumph for The Den's new 'It Gal' Melania Trump.

We just love how Melania works colour!

My Estella and I have our daily phone chats that always include the latest fashion offerings featured on The Daily Mail which we both never miss.  Estella, after four decades of GSL tutelage, has developed a keen eye but always wants to hear the GSL verdict from on high.

FLOTUS isn't afraid to have a go at  unusual, interesting, but still perfect for occasion outfits. Estella thinks she's fab but thinks she'd be even more so with shorter. darker hair. GSL disagrees. Melania, keep doing what you do!

We both love Melania and to my best recollection she hasn't made a false fashion move since Inauguration Day.  She's gradually becoming more comfortable at podium and it must be quite nerve racking delivering a speech in the 4th or 5th language you learned while under intense scrutiny.

Everybody knows how The Den loves Winter White!

Love this!
Melania can work Summer White too as this was from last July's Republican convention.
Yes, she took heat as her speech writer had lifted some rather mundane passages from Michelle Obama's speechwriter.

...and this!
Mrs. Trump's LBD
Estella, those long locks add dramatic updo volume!
Getting Shifty...

The Flapper-Fringe comeback is official.

...updoing by day
This young girl wanted a selfie with FLOTUS at a children's hospital.

....and more colour!!!

Looking smashing in emerald green when arriving in Poland,

At the G-20 summit there were lots of stylish First Ladies:
With Melania is France's First Lady Brigitte Macron a former school teacher who married a man several years her junior. I'm sure a RomCom is now being developed where a 41year old teacher and her 15 year old student meet cute.
She does have a nice set of gams but the dress is too short for a G-20 First Spouse event.

Hemline Issues...
Brigitte Macron with Argentina's Juliana Awada. I'm old enough to remember when it was considered bad form for forty-something school teachers to cavort with 15 year old boys and micro-minis on 64 year old women at Official State Functions was a no-no.

Moving on...

Melania with Argentina's First Lady Juliana Awada during a recent White House visit. GSL would love some Bilateral Negotiations with Ms Awada.

This is where it all started.
I was at the Inauguration back in January and this is one of the greatest outfits I've ever seen.

and then a backlash...
Many noted that Melania was 'channeling' Jackie.

The days following Inauguration had some Jackie fans viciously hating on our Melania and some members of the press have been conspicuously mean spirited to Melania, Ivanka, and several women associated with the Trump White House. GSL didn't like the Love Jackie-Hate Melania mud slinging that ensued as I don't think many of those hating on Melania have thought this through.  GSL is a Jackie fan but like most of us, she wasn't perfect and had some unflattering moments.

We wonder if those hating on Melania do so because she is the wife of a man they think won a rigged Presidential election or they think she's fair game for marrying a "vulgar billionaire".
The classy Aristotle Onassis used to boast to a former Senior Kennedy White House Advisor (I believe it was Ted Sorensen) in disgusting detail about bedroom activities he enjoyed with our former First Lady the previous evening. When Ari died, Jackie shook down his grieving daughter for $35million on the airport tarmac before the Greek Shipping Magnate's body was cold.

We do know Jackie Kennedy despised Martin Luther King, and would publicly belittle teenage daughter Sweet-Tooth Caroline when she ordered dessert and tell her she was getting fat and nobody would ever want to marry her.  Jackie told designer Oleg Cassini how she wanted to wear classy outfits that fat middle aged American women couldn't get.  From what I've read, Jackie was a world class Fat Shamer.  When Melania's husband mentions how a female employee "sure likes her candy" or returns fire on Rosie O'Donnell who had mocked his physical appearance, he's labeled a misogynist while Jackie remains beloved as a Style Icon to Instagram Feminists.  The classy Rosie O'Donnell speculated over twitter to 1.1 million followers whether Melania's 11 year old son was autistic.  GSL's first instinct is to be protective of devoted mothers of young children and doesn't like seeing them being attacked by those who keep two sets of books.

Jackie Kennedy was a fine First Lady and devoted mother with great style and grace and the same can be said about our current First Lady.

    1. GSL, true to his Scots-Irish heritage struggles in this heat/high humidity making it's annual appearance. It doesn't approach anything like that experienced in the sandhills of Fort Bragg or the Mississippi Delta that you have written so beautifully about in your recent post.

    2. How kind and complimentary was your comment on the Family Reunion post! Those memories are just indelible, and I'm always looking to make such lasting memories for my own GRANDS. Those people will be little names on a screen for any of them who care for such things, and that's a loss to the youngers I think. Those days of closeness and conversation and who made the best fried pies and which Grandpa could call ducks without a call and make kites that would soar above any.

All these modern marvels we've gained and all the old ways and manners and stories we're leaving behind. I'm writing down everything I can think of, and if any one of the little ones coming on is interested, the whole shelf of books is theirs and welcome. If not, maybe they'll be a surprise for whoever finds them someday in Goodwill.

Headed out for lunch with Chris---it's our Anniversary!!

    3. I didn't notice this latest beautifully expressed offering. If I get my way that whole shelf of books will be lovingly hardbound, read with soul enriching delight, and proudly displayed on thousands of highly discriminating bookshelves and loaned out to only those they hold most dear.

  2. PS R.I.P. and Semper Fi to all your Brothers of the Air who died in the crash in Mississippi. The site is just a few miles from our home there, and my heart is with their families in this tragedy.

    1. Was on the go all day yesterday so just had a chance to catch up regarding this tragedy. The plane that went down is the fuel tanker variant of what we egressed from and have a spectacular record for safety. Will watch closely what the investigation uncovers.
So sad regarding the Marines, Navy Corpsman and their families.

  3. GSL, I am devastated too about the USMC plane that went down. My heart breaks for the families of those servicemembers.

As for Melania, I have to laugh that Anna Wintour et al are probably gnashing their teeth daily when they realize they picked the wrong side and will have to eat big servings of humble pie when they finally put Melania on the cover. Oh I can't wait. She has been knocking it out of the park every. Single. Time. My favorite right now is the outfit as she left Air Force One after their return from the G20, did you see it? Black top, white lace Dolce & Gabbana lace skirt, black Manolos and an Hermes Birkin in black croc with gold hardware! Gorgeous.

As for capris/cropped pants I do hope you notice that Melania has worn a pair herself? White ones? With a mint green cardigan with rhinestone buttons? A velvet placket? I bet you saw this outfit but won't cover it because of your well-known disdain for cropped pants. I thought of you instantly when I saw that outfit ha ha ha! I am wearing a pair of crops in the latest installment of "How I Wear My" hee hee hee.

As for the Jackie love/Melania hate, how ridiculous. They are both so different. I like them both and don't feel the need to compare them. They are very different women from very different backgrounds and eras. The Saint Jackie thing is so old and tired. I LIKE that she married Ari. I think that was a gutsy, shrewd, and strategic move on her part. I think she thought like a military general in her life. What's wrong with that? xx

Uh-oh, I see I wrote you a novel lol. xx

    1. My Dear Jill,
I am on the go all day and with my brand new first ever iPhone (GSL has resolved to buy American at every turn) I can't give your comment the response it richly deserves until late tonight.
You are always welcome at The Den to stay/comment as you please.

    2. Oh my goodness, I did just find a pic (Vogue online) of that DIVINE black top/D & G exquisitely rendered white lace skirt...only from the side as the stair side-rails block full view. I can't find the white capris/mint green cardy.

I've got my people trying to set up a meet with FLOTUS in hopes of her leading a campaign to eradicate capris/cropped pants and UGGs from the face of the earth. The worst thing to happen to a fine set of long luscious gams since house maid's knee.

AS for D & G, those fancy boys must giggle themselves to sleep every night when they were virtually the only designers publicly sticking by Melania before these weekly 'Trump is about to be impeached/imprisoned' scandals started to seem ridiculous. Melania is hitting it out of the park every single time as you say and on a bigger platform than Vogue could ever hope to provide. They NEED her and she doesn't need them. Anna Wintour certainly knows that a massive Melania cover/photo shoot would/will be the biggest selling Vogue issue ever and by a factor of 3 and she'll lift that rag out of the doldrums. G-Cod should sit this one out and let GSL take the reigns; I still haven't forgiven them for fumbling the Edith Wharton/Mount retrospective (hmmmmm??, hey how 'bout we use a dim-looking Oligarch Plaything Russian supermodel as stand-in for America's Greatest Female Novelist rather than an up and coming stylish female American novelist we can bring to a huge international audience...no that might actually be a pro-woman course of action and we prefer to whine about lack of opportunities...)

I have/had no prob with Jackie/Ari only it seems that every Instagram Feminist adores Jackie while bashing Melania over similar/lesser misdeeds but they must follow the herd and be a victim.

    3. Agree with what Jill said. Melania is beautiful. It is obvious. Plus if we are speaking of fashion then as I tell people around me- let us stick with fashion and not mix politics with dresses and shoes. I am not PC enough to say Macron's wife is my aesthetic ideal. I do wonder what they would say about her if she was Trump's wife.

    4. With Trump's Senior Advisor and Former Campaign Boss, Kellyanne Conway, a CNN producer said she looked like she got hit in the face with a shovel, Daily Beast writer said Press Secretary Sarah Sanders looks like a "butch queen" and Atlantic' s Julia Ioffe speculated very graphically whether Ivanka and her father are having sex.
Double standards abound when not in lockstep with Feminist Establishment.
My tone re Mrs Macron a bit harsh upon further reflection and will make amends. When Trump complimented her a little clumsily but well-intentioned re what great shape she's in there were feminist themed outrages from all the usual pathetic suspects.
American economy booming and Melanie looks sensational every time she walks out the door so someone gotta pay!

  4. I too adore winter white. It looks so chic amid winter's dark-toned clothes.

As for the age gap thing, it works both ways (look at the Trumps). I do agree though that 15 does raise one's eye brows but at least they stuck it out.

    1. Yes 15 does raise one's eyebrow and often leads to romance killing dealings with prosecutors, grand juries, jail terms, and justifiably outraged parents.

Perhaps you know someone soon approaching 15ish and GSL wonders at the reception a 41yo suitor would receive at Casa CD?

  5. Melania is absolutely beautiful and I agree that her style as first lady is perfect. I have commented that she appears to be morphing into Rachel Welch or at the least looks like she might be wearing one of her hairpieces, I don't know, but I would like her to go back to a dark chestnut brunette.

    1. Welcome back JH,
Generally speaking a First Lady looks far more classically presentable with hair at prescribed length etc. I saw our previous FLOTUS lookin fab in hair I know she'd need a chin-strap for when visiting our Windy City home...but still she looked sensational!
Count GSL a huge Melania fan!
