Mother's Day Week

Mum with her 3 boys circa 1972 in Columbus, Ohio. GSL in middle wearing a shirt that an older girl, Kitty Maiche, commented on the school bus as making him look 'sexy'. Not having an iPhone handy to google,
GSL inquired to Mum what 'sexy' meant....GSL had a new favorite shirt.

With the Princess of Cambridge giving birth to a beautiful baby girl a few days ago, I thought it  fortuitous that those sublimely lovely pics of Kate leaving hospital with her daughter, Charlotte, swathed in blankies to begin Mother's Day week in the United States with our big day being this Sunday, May 10th.  I think the word 'lovely' describes the highest form of feminine beauty and in my view, a young woman is never more beautiful than when she has recently had a child.  A new mother may feel her figure is not at it's best but nothing can diminish the beauty of a mother cuddling her newborn son or daughter. As I mentioned over at Faux Fuchsia's earlier today, Will & Kate are easily my favorite young couple and have brought two beautiful children into this world.  They are a powerful reminder that we need to do good for them...and other children.

Grandma & Grandpa Cooper from Mansfield, Ohio circa 1992 about 2-3 years before they died.
They were both school teachers and their first date was to the Cleveland Ballet...not Grandpa's idea.
They were both the finest sort of people you'd ever want to meet.

With Mother's Day week beginning on American shores, I wanted to honor my matrilineal line this week. While I've always been immediately recognizable as my mother's son, I am very much in the mold of my father's side but taking more after my paternal grandfather and other ancestors more than my own father.  My mother's side were the archetypical Midwesterners from Ohio that went to church every Sunday, sang in the choir, and were deeply grateful for having the good fortune of providing a comfortable home and hopeful future for their children.
Mum at far left. My Grandmother was a graduate of the Oberlin Music Conservatory (now Oberlin College) and taught piano her whole life in addition to being a school teacher and Music Director of her church. My mother played the piano and flute and was in the Duke University Concert Band. I am certain Grandma made this dress as likely every girl's mother did in this group.
My mother also loves to sew and made her GSL a Scottish kilt...which unfortunately a swarm of moths made a short meal of
a few years back when in storage.

In my upcoming children's book series, my pen name is William J. Cooper after my mother's family and our book series will have a philanthropic mission we are calling The Cooper Fund.  After over 4 years of trying to find a suitable illustrator who was available, our first sketches were sent over last week and we liked what we saw.

A sketch for page 1 of Book 1 of a book series I am doing under the pen name William J. Cooper and titled:
The Adventures of Nipsy and Timzy.

  1. What a charming, sweet family! I especially have a sweet spot for little blonde boys in tropical shirts. My own two sons made twice-a-year trips to Lansky's in Memphis (proudly proclaimed as "Where Elvis Shops.") and invariably brought home a half-dozen Hawaiian shirts.

And your Mom is absolutely lovely---I scrolled down for another picture, thinking she must be your sister, for she barely looks TEENS, let alone MOM.

I'm so pleased for your book, and will be right in line for each and every. It's an exciting time, isn't it?

  2. GSL, Loved this tribute to mothers! Totally agree and Kate and Will. Truly inspiring to us all. What a terrific photo of you boys with your mom. She is lovely. That story was classic!! You were quite the sharp dresser already. Your family sounds wonderful and I only hope my boys have such an appreciation for their heritage. Moms do make life more beautiful. I feel it keenly this year as I am without my mom for the first time. Kim

    1. Kim,
Terribly sorry you will not have your mom to celebrate in person this year. You must have had a wonderful mother as well. I know my grandmother and likely your mother would want us to remember but also to honor them by living their fine example for those in need of our care and guidance.

  4. What a charming tribute to the mothers of your family, and everywhere! Having three boys must have kept your mother on her feet, but how lovely that you honor her today in this post.

I adored viewing that charming photograph of your mother and friends, and also the one of young GSL ablaze in red.

Thanks for sharing the illustration from your book. It must be thrilling for you to see it evolving so quickly.

    1. Thank you CD. You did such a wonderful post on your father last year that I referenced in my recent Just Dandy post. Honoring those who have been good to us is the least we can do isn't it?

  5. Well what can i say? I was lucky enough to know of all these fine folks of gsl's (both sides) while they were living and I want to pay tribute to his mother by saying "they just don't come finer than Ellen Law". She is indeed a remarkable woman and most certainly one of a kind. A true lady without airs of any kind.

  6. Too funny about that shirt - a sexy hawaiian shirt?! Loved the family photo though. It's Mother's day here too on Sunday, which means up early to watch my Son play football, then frantic preparations for my daughter's birthday party. We don't make that big a deal out of it, so I'll be lucky to get a cup of tea in bed.
Loved your Mum's dress and musical talents, and good luck with the book!

    1. Heidi,
I wanted to wear that shirt every day! Everybody thought Kitty Mache (I think 7th grade then to my 2nd-3rd grade) was the absolute coolest girl with everyone a little in awe of her. Her little comment added a little swag to GSL's step that's still going strong even when Mainland attired.

  7. What a lovely and loving tribute to the women in your family,G! Me thinks your precious mother may have had her hands full with her three sons! There is more than a glint of mischief in all of your eyes! Yes,dear G, you are looking rather smug in your Hawaiian shirt! Now we know why!
ITA about Wills and Kate! They are my favorite 'in the news' young couple, too!
Happy to hear you book is coming along and that there is Spring in your step!

    Loved Estella's comment above!

  8. Love this post, especially the first picture and the story about Kitty! Oh please tell me you two went to high school together eventually and became an item. Please. I need some entertainment today. I have always loved the saying about the mother of 3 sons having a special place in heaven. My mother is also mother to 3 boys so her spot is waiting! Haha. What a handsome trio of tow-headed tots! BTW, very excited about your children's book, that is so great! xx

    1. My mother only had 3 boys although I always teased little bro TFL that he was the daughter Mum had always wanted. I do think Mum has earned a special place in heaven with what we put her through, Unfortunately, Kitty Mache who was far and away the coolest girl around back then moved away a year or so later prior to my Estella moving in as that would have been one helluva catfight over GSL access. Kitty was about 4-5 years older so Estella would have been hopelessly outmatched early on...

    1. Thank you Jen, the illustrations are quite good which aren't best represented here as a few scenes had to carry some relatively subtle story narrative which turned out surprisingly well.
