Peter Poulos- American Hero

Peter Poulos- World War II Veteran Age 97
My buddies took me out for a belated birthday dinner Saturday night with my best friend, aka The Good Doctor, telling me he was bringing a "special guest". He wasn't kidding. The Good Doctor brought his favorite patient he has been helping keep a medical marvel for almost 20 years. His name is Peter Poulos and he was a highly decorated war hero in World War II and he's 97 years old and fast approaching his 98th birthday December 23rd.  He's a Chicago legend and for good reason.  This link is a TV interview back when he was a wee lad of 92.  He looks and sounds even better now.  For over 31 years he has been volunteering 3 days a week at the HInes Veterans Administration Hospital.

In WWII  Pete served in the 6th Army in the South Pacific seeing heavy action at Guadacanal, Java, and the Phillipines and was with General MacArthur when the Terms of Surrender were signed by the Japanese ending the war. Upon returning to Chicago he was given a plum assignment as Postman for Chicago's Gold Coast where he became something of a celebrity ambassador based on his War Hero status. When Sinatra was in town at The Pump Room he'd ask to have 'The Greek' join him for coffee.  At The Original Playboy Mansion 'Hef' would insist Pete make himself at home, have a drink, and enjoy the scenery.

The Hines VA Hospital is the largest medical facility in the world encompassing 200 acres and for over 31 years Pete has been there 3 days a week walking around 10 miles a day going from bed to bed to rehab centers and helping sick men and women who have honorably served our country get better both physically and mentally.  He is an inspiration to every one he sees always sharing words of encouragement and instilling hope to those who need it most. He showed me a pic he keeps in his wallet of when he greeted President George W. Bush at Grant Park about 10 years ago when he arrived on Marine 1.  I asked Pete if I could get a copy and soon it shall hang in a place of honor in The Lion's Den.

This week 97 year old Peter Poulos, just as he has been doing for the last 31+ years, will go to the Hines VA Hospital for three 10 hour days and offer assistance, hope, and inspiration for the men and women he refers to as "my heroes" as an unpaid volunteer.

That bar looks a very fine place to enjoy a drink or more. If I ever make it back to your side of the world I'd like to drink there!

    1. I should add Wendy there were 3 doctors there who collectively have treated tens of thousands of senior citizens and none of them have ever seen a 97 year old in such great shape. I forgot to mention that his older brother is 103.

    1. It sure was Naomi and the Good Doctor shares his sense of duty as he could easily triple his salary in the private sector but he'd much rather care for the men and women who have served our country with distinction.

  7. What an amazing and selfless character Pete is. He is so inspiring to listen to (I just watched the video so thank you for that). I've always found great inspiration from the older generation and enjoy listening to their life stories and wise tidbits on not only living a good life, but thriving while doing so. Pete could teach some spring chickens a thing or two I think. I raise my glass of retsina to him!

    1. Yes indeed CD, I am going to have to research Pete's dietary habits and I'm sure his long tenure as mail carrier followed by hospital volunteer walking 10 miles a day has a lot to do with his extraordinary health as walking/standing is now the big new thing..

  8. Thankyou GSL I am indebted to pete Poulos for keeping our world safe. He is a hero in anyone's language. The only sad thing is how few comments this extraordinary post generated compared to posts about film stars - witty and clever they may be without men like this many of us would not be living lives we currently enjoy.

  9. What a lovely man. And such a treat for you to enjoy his company for your birthday. I cannot get enough of the stories that old soldiers tell. There are not many, in my experience, who really talk about their service. My friends father landed on Normandy in the first wave of young men and survived that morning to be captured later by German soldiers but he wouldn't really talk about his experience and last year, alas, he passed away.
People like Mr Poulos are inspiring and also remind me of the many people of this generation with the same level of integrity and bravery that get lost in the noise of revenue generating scandal and pop culture garbage.

    1. Bravo Bebe! I knew you'd be moved by his fine example and I was on the phone with The Good Doctor for over an hour last night mostly talking about what an extraordinary man Pete is and we share those same sentiments you close your comments with.
There is even more about Pete that I haven't mentioned which I hope to reveal to Den readers in the future. His is a story that must be told.

    1. Hi Jody, he makes me feel like a 2-toed sloth too. That shirt he's wearing is his original uniform and he only wore it at Good Doc's request. He told me he weighted 154lbs when he volunteered and is 153lbs now and ripped !

  11. Alas we have a photo of the mysterious GSL!

What a lovely tribute to a lovely man. It's nice to know there are selfless people on the planet and I wish people like him were celebrated more often. Thank you for sharing his story with us.

    1. Jen, he really is a national treasure and I hope to do a few more features on him as this doesn't begin to tell of what an extraordinary life he has led nor does it adequately account for his depth and deeply held principles.

  12. Excellent! It must have been an honor, indeed. Veterans should not be left behind. They should instead be valued by being provided for the best of their individual abilities. Thanks for sharing that! All the best!
